I am getting a "...doesn't understand the event..." error message.

You do not have the necessary scripting additions installed! You are missing either Current Date, File Commands, or Read/Write Commands. These files should be in one of the following locations:

MacOS 8.0 and later
     System Folder:Scripting Additions:

System 7.6.1 or earlier
     System Folder:Extensions:Scripting Additions:
